SPIRIT OF THE ANCESTORS
This exhibition is inspired by the long tradition of artists in my mother’s French family.
One of these ancestors, the sculptor Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume (my great great grandfather) worked on the restoration of Notre Dame during the 1850’s and 60’s with the architect Violet-le-Duc. During the course of his long life he had many great friendships with fellow artists such as Daumier, Corot, and Daubigny. His descendants have been sculptors and painters in every generation since.
Part of his practice as a sculptor was to make plaster casts of the medieval carvings that he was restoring, as well as , for his own interest, plaster casts from life - including friends, models, animals and plants. I have based many of the paintings in the exhibition on these plaster casts.
