Polly James is an artist based in the Welsh Borders near Hay. Polly read English Literature at Exeter University and went on to work in London for a number of years before returning to Wales to draw in 2018. Polly now specialises in working predominantly in charcoal and is influenced by classical drawing, sculpture and prehistoric drawing and painting.
This latest show focuses upon our admiration for the beauty and strength of animals drawing on inspiration from the wild mountains and experiences farming in the Welsh Borders. Influenced by a love of wildlife and classical training, Polly's show explores both light and life in animals and birds through the timeless media of charcoal. These latest drawings are as much an exploration into mark marking and the use of charcoal, as they are a journey to observe and capture the essence and energy of the subjects themselves.
Polly grew up on a livestock farm in Herefordshire and as a result has been surrounded by nature from a very early age and from this a love of the outdoors and all things wild followed. She continues to find inspiration from observations of wildlife and agriculture at home and abroad and also regularly undertakes commissions.
